Environmentally Responsible Bagging

At Hilex, we believe in keeping our planet as pristine as possible. That's why we are committed to plastic bag recycling with our Bag-2-Bag® program. We encourage all consumers to practice the 3 R's: Reduce-Recycle-Reuse.

Reduce the number of plastic bags used.
While we like to see our products being used, unnecessary or improper usage is not good for the environment. To use fewer bags, follow proper bagging techniques and be willing to accept some items without a bag. See the "How to Pack a Bag" section. Shoppers and baggers can work together to properly pack bags and reduce unnecessary usage.

Recycle plastic bags.
Our Bag-2-Bag® recycling program makes plastic bag recycling easy. Simply bring your used bags back to participating stores and drop them into the plastic bag recycling bin. Or if you live in participating municipalities, you can recycle plastic bags with your other curbside recyclables.

Check with your local municipality, waste management authority, and merchants who use plastic bags to see if they are part of the Bag-2-Bag® recycling program. If not, encourage them to take a look at our Bag-2-Bag® program.

Reuse plastic bags to give them a second life.
While we don't certify our bags for alternative uses we do encourage youto reuse them as:

  • Household trash bags
  • Laundry bags
  • Travel and beach bags
  • Storage containers
  • Pet waste

Did you know that plastic bags are the most reused packaging item with surveys showing that more than 60% are reused for bin liners alone?

How to Pack a Bag

Store purchases come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and weights. Some items should never be bagged and other products come with ready to carry packaging that reduce the need for a bag. Shoppers and baggers can work together to properly pack bags and reduce usage.

Bags that are packed right:

  • Hold more and reduce the total number of bags used
  • More stable in your car
  • Usually easier to carry

There are two basic approaches to good bagging technique:

Build Walls Plan
Build walls on sides of bags with boxes or tall, light items - it helps the bag stand up and balances the weight. Fill centers with cans, small cartons and other packages.

No Walls Plan
Use all items to pack the bag out - a filled bag will hold all items in and not spill as easily.

Good bagging technique should also include:

  1. Keep cold and wet items separate from other items.
  2. Protect glass containers by separating them with small boxes and light packages
  3. Mixing heavy and light items in the same bag (Don't put all the heavy items in the same bag.)
  4. Only bag items that need to be bagged.

Do not bag the following items:

    • Packages with handles
    • Gallon jugs
    • Bagged produce
    • Large packages that can go directly into a cart
