Success Stories

San Juan Capistrano and CR&R
San Juan Capistrano, CA was the first city in the nation to begin a Bag-2-BagŪ residential curbside plastic bag recycling program. Hilex worked with the city of San Juan Capistrano and CR&R Recycling and Refuse Services to set up a program that collects recyclables from approximately 8500 households every week.

Residents of San Juan Capistrano received a 4-gallon bucket and a year’s supply (a roll of 52) of blue plastic recycling bags. During the week residents fill the bag-lined bucket with their used plastic bags. On trash pickup day, they place only the filled blue bag of bags into their CR&R curbside recycling container.

In the first two weeks of the program CR&R collected 290 lbs of plastic bags. That's approximately 20,000 bags that might have otherwise become litter or taken up landfill space! These bags will instead go to the Hilex recycling plant in North Vernon, IN where they will be recycled into brand new bags.

Dana Point and San Clemente
Dana Point, CA and San Clemente, CA have joined the Bag-2-BagŪ residential recycling program. This will add approximately 30,500 households to the program to help water quality and reduce the litter and landfill space requirements for these cities.
